We came back yesterday around 10 a.m. We were supposed to arrive the evening before. But after 6 hours of layover in Atlanta, the layover turned to nine hours and then our flight was completely cancelled until the next morning.

We were beyond tired when we got home. It’s so hard to sleep in a COLD airport on uncomfortable airport seats and we only got maybe 3 hours of sleep. We got up for the flight on  Monday morning at 5:30 a.m., which is Sunday evening at 10:30 p.m. CST. We didn’t get to sleep until after midnight and only then for a short while.

But we got home, no luggage was lost and we slept wonderful in our own beds last night. I am still tired and a bit off, so I don’t think you will see new artwork on my blog today.

I did get the new idea book and catalog yesterday and drooled all over the pages. I will definitely put a big order in in July. I can’t wait!

This castle stands in the middle of a little town called Mayen. I have family living there (in the town, not the castle!). The kids and I went to a slate museum underneath and climbed all the way on top of the tower. Like most days of our visit, it rained that day. It started just as we reached the top. It was still a great castle to explore.

castle-front-mayen.jpg

This is on the back of the castle. It is definitely build later then the front, but I think it’s part of the castle no less.

Church and town wall are in background. The head in the front of the picture belongs to my wonderful Mom.

My sweet kids in the slate museum. These underground mines were bunkers in the second world war. The town was almost leveled in 8 minutes of bombing. They had newspaper articles about that in the museum as well as fossils in slate and other interesting facts about the town and slate (well….those weren’t that interesting. LOL). The kids had a blast walking in the dark mine shafts with hard hats and oil coats.

I think this is the only tower left from the town wall in Mayen.

town-wall-mayen.jpg

Part of the town wall in Mayen. There are only parts of it left. They were build in the 13th and 14th century.

  9. There’s just something about the Atlanta airport – we were there for 7 hrs once.

Thanks for sharing your pictures! Did I ever tell you I was made in Germany? Born in New York but created in Berlin.

  15. Out of curiosity, I had to see how far that was from where my Aunt is from. Worms is a little more than an hour from Mayen. Glad you had a great time but now it’s time to get stamping!!!!

  16. Always nice to be able to view pictures from others travels. That’s the only way I’ll have a chance to see most of the world! Thanks for sharing.

  17. Welcome back! Those photos are amazing! What a neat place to visit, I’m so jealous! When I visit family on vacation, I only get to go to *Missouri*! It can’t compare to that! lol!

  18. Welcome home! Love your pictures. We just don’t get to see things like that here in the states. A wall built in the 13th or 14th century? Around here, old is pre-1900.

  19. Glad you are home safe and sound, albeit exhausted! Thanks for sharing your pictures with us!

  20. Hey Mom… I’m glad you’re home safely. Glad you guys all had a good time. Now… when will I get the new catalog??? I want to drool too!

  21. Welcome home and thanks for sharing some history and your pics with us. Wow, that castle is definitely interesting.

  22. These pictures bring back memories of my mother’s home town in Germany (Kelheim). The town still has all four of the town walls and watchtowers on each side.
