Today’s tutorial on SCS is for Faux Tearing. It’s an easy and fast technique to add a faux torn edge look.

I started with a 3″ x 4 1/4″ piece of Kiwi cardstock for the faux torn layer.

It was brayered with Kiwi Kiss (brayer with foam attachment), then stamped with Old Olive and the stripe background from Happiness.

Then it was layered first on a 1/4″ bigger piece of Chocolate Chip, then a 1/4″ bigger piece of Riding Hood Red cardstock. White Taffeta Ribbon was tied right under the faux torn edge. Under that I adhered my sentiment layers.

The sentiment is from To You & Yours and is stamped on Whisper White with Chocolate Chip ink. It was punched out with small oval punch. The edges were sponged with Baja Breeze ink. It was layered on a sponged 1″ circle of Baja Breeze, a 1 1/4″ circle of Riding Hood Red and a slightly larger Kiwi Kiss circle.

On the top right I adhered a small Photo corner out of Baja Breeze. It was sponged and a snow flake from Snow Swirled was stamped over it. It was topped of with three white brads.

The winter scene from To You & Yours was stamped in Baja Breeze on Whisper White cardstock and cut out with Oval Nestabilities. Again the edges were sponged with Baja Breeze. The image was layered first on a Riding Hood Red oval, then on a Chocolate Scallop oval. Both were cut with oval Nestabilities. It was adhered to the faux torn layers with dimensionals.

The card base is a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of Baja Breeze cardstock folded in half. The edges were sponged and the front was stamped with snowflake stamps from the stamp set Snow Swirled. Again dimensionals were used to attach the layers to the card base. Last a dotted border was added with a white gel pen.

Later added:
I had a question about my Happiness background stamp. My husband cut the wood block for me and I mounted the strips separately. You can see my cut up set here.

  2. I love the tutorials and look forward to them each week. Some are new to me and others such as this one are things I have forgotten about. Your card is gorgeous!

  3. Cool! Thanks for sharing with us.

  4. Beate, deine Weihnachtskarte sieht super schön aus. Gerade, weil es nicht die typische x-mas Farbkombi ist! Das gestempelte Häuschen lässt direkt Weihnachtsstimmung aufkommen. Toll! L.G.Silke

  5. Your card is gorgeous. I love the little white gel pen dots on the edges!!!

  6. I love it, Beate! Faux tearing is fun and fast – I’ve used it on a couple of occasions to add borders to scrapbook pages.

You got the To You and Yours set! I was immediately drawn to it when I had a look at the new catalogue – but disappointed in doesn’t come in French. I keep coming back to it and wondering if I’m going to break and splurge on the two images even though I won’t use the sentiments… That house image is just so darling! 😀

Thanks for sharing your wonderful new creation!

  7. Fabulous Christmas card! And the colors look awesome; love non-traditional colors for Christmas. Guess I am going to have to get a foam attachment for my brayer (love your tutorial!), cause I really want to give the faux torn edge a try. Thanks so much for sharing.

  14. Love the tutorial. Thank you. I am a bit confused…not on the technique, but on the stamp you used. I don’t own it so I don’t know, but I thought Happiness was one large background stamp. How did you get only the striped (and dotted part) that I see in the pictures? Did you cut up the original background image? Where did you get a blank block to mount it?
