The sketch for today’s challenge is from a card Jenn Balcer stamped. I just love her! She is the most fun, kindest person and an unbelievable stamper! Check her blog out if you haven’t done so already!

Kim McNutt recently made a super cute card with crayon resist and Unfrogettable. I mean…she always makes incredible cards. But this one reminded me of how much I like the look of that technique. So I decided to use it with the Crab & company set. I love that little star fish.

I am just a bit confused about the sayings in this set. Does “Sandy Claws” and “A Pinch to grow an Inch” make sense to you? Is there an American saying I just don’t know about?

The card base is Marigold Morning. I stamped it with Itty bitty backgrounds and Marigold morning classic ink. The black layer is 2 3/4″ x 5 1/4″, the stamped glossy white 2 1/2″ x 5″. I stamped the Glossy cardstock with black stazon. I used the heat gun to make sure it was dry. Then went over the images with white crayon. Next I used sponge daubers and Certainly Celery, Marigold Morning and Cool Caribbean to apply color all over the cardstock. Lastly I buffed it with a paper towel. The ink will resist where crayon was applied.

The circles are punched with 3/4″, 1 1/4″ and 1 3/8″ circle punches. For the smaller black circle I used the smallest circle template from my coluzzle!

The dotted ribbon is from Starlitstudio, turquoise grosgrain is from Stampin’ Up!.

Have a wonderful day! My downline Stephanie is coming over later and I get to stamp more! Did I mention I am excited I can just stamp for fun? Hugs and smiles

Okay after posting this and you all telling me Snappy Claws stands for SAnTA CLAUSE, I felt like a complete goober and was a bit embarrassed. I changed the saying out to Oh Happy Day! Good thing I can laugh about myself!

I used the Typset Alpha for Oh, Everyday Flexible Phrases for Happy Day.

  1. OMG! That is TOO CUTE! I love it! It makes me happy!

  2. Oh, and I don’t know about “pinch to grow an inch”, but “Sandy Claws” I believe refers to Santa Claus???

  3. Cute card. Yes, “Sandy Claws” is in reference to Santa Claus.
As for the “Pinch to grow an inch” When you get a birthday spanking (in fun) on your birthday at the end of the spanking after your age you give the person one extra swat, and say,”One to be good on” and then pinch them and say, “And a pinch to grow an inch.” Silly but that’s what the saying is for. Ida

  4. HI Beate! Darling card! Love how you did the side treatment! A pinch to grow an inch is a little saying for a birthday. Kids love it…well, the ones giving the pinch! LOL

  5. Absolutely love the card and think it is so cute that you don’t know what those sayings are. I love ya, girl!

  6. Beautiful card Beate…I am a big fan of idioms and their origins. For your own perusal, a site like this might be interesting: http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/list.php. For their origins, see this one: http://www.phrases.org.uk/.

Funny enough, “a pinch to grow an inch” is not that popular or documented…we do say it here in Canada all the time though!

  7. Your card is so cute, and I love how your crayon resist turned out! I also love your story about Sandy Claws….very cute. 😉 Even though I’m from here, I have trouble with idioms all the time (just ask my DH), so don’t feel like a goober.

  8. But you’re the sweetest “goober” I ever met!!! Love the card! Love your blog too.

  9. Adorable card, Beate!

  10. Yeah you are such a goober!!! Lucky we like you! I’m totally playing..you are a super star! I hope you ahve a great time stampin! I am jealous!!!

  11. You’ve really got beach on the brain, girly! I bet Florida’s nice this time of year. *sigh* Cute, cute, cute card!! You know how much I love crayon resist!

  12. You are too funny! Did you get/give “birthday spankings” when you were a little kid? We gave 1 swat for each year old you are and then at the end we gave a gentle (unless it was your sister or brother) pinch and said “and a pinch to grow an inch”. Well, I’m from Iowa that’s what we did anyway 🙂

  13. This post is so cute…and funny! And that’s an adorable card. Good idea to use the set without the crab!

  14. I love this card and this technique! I have a white crayon I stole from my girls just to do this technique and still haven’t done it (months later)! I think that’s what I will do on my next card. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

  15. Adorable card Beate! You must think us American’s are strange with our funny little traditions (i.e. a pinch to grow an inch).

  16. Hi Beate,
As I read your post, I was smiling and nodding, because I have these problems too! Although English is my first language, I speak New Zealand English, and my husband is Canadian. When we first met, we had to say to each other “What did you say? Say it again! No, say it slooowly!”
There are so many funny sayings in North America I had never heard of, even growing up watching American television programmes. I admit to being absolutely horrified when I heard of a pinch to grow an inch!
Mind you , I apparently have some odd sayings too- my girls say I’m not to tell them to “rattle your dags” anymore when we are in public (it means to hurry up)!
Love your blog, your cards are choice, mate!

  17. Beate, you’re so pretty! 😉 LOVE YA!

  18. When growing up here in Canada you’d get on your birthday (read, very, very young children, and obesity wasn’t such an issue) “a pinch to grow an inch and a slap to get fat”
Funny but I haven’t thought of that in years. I’ll give the bumps to my toddler, and definitely some pinches, but that’s probably it.
    Nice card!

  19. I really like doodling right now, but paper piercing is something is something I am trying to do more too. So many new techniques out there! Thanks for sharing your blog with us!

  20. Very pretty card! But then your cards are always so nice.

  21. Cute card, love the color combo. thanks for sharing your talent.

  22. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I couldn’t stop laugthing at that story. How cute is that?
Thanks for making me giggle and realize what goobers Americans are and how corny our sayings can be!

  23. You are too funny! I don’t have this set…YET, but it’s such a cute one. I too, LOVE this technique and haven’t used it for quite a while. :0) Thanks for the inspiration. BTW…I meant to email you about your card you sent me, but then I decided to return the favor and send U one, so I was just going to wait until you got it. ??!! YES, I would love to exchange links. LOVE all your work and I’m very honored you stopped by mine. Rubber Hugs to you!!

  24. This is a sweet card! Makes me want to go to the beach!
